Saurday Success!

Hey all,

Been on a bit on a mission lately. As happens, every so often i go through a 'i wanna catch jewies' phase.... Over the years its been a live bait exercise but over the last few years lures have been my No.1 method to catch em..

We hit Brisbane Waters on sat and concentrated our efforts around the rip bridge...bloody deep water around there and substantial lures need to be used for two reasons. The first was the weight jighead needed to get down that deep, especially with current flowing, meant bigger lures needed to be adopted. The second reason was i am trying to catch a Jew over 20kg on lures and hopefully make the front cover of fishing world magazine... a little vein i know but a mans gotta do!

We had early success and Geroge (my uncle) snared a little soapy from around a few anchored boats. It was only about 5lbs so good practice but far from a front cover! As the tide turned we hit the real deep gutters...in about 90odd feet. I had a slight tap tap which is typical of a jew take on lures. You'd think they would hit like a steamtrain but the fact is they hit more like a frail 5 year old kindergarten girl.

I missed the sucker on the first go but the second time he came back i didnt miss the mark. Initially i thought i hooked the bottom. The weight was huge and before too long the jewie realised it was hooked. I followed the fish, which had my 3-5kg stick fully loaded and refused to come off the bottom. After chasing it for 5 mins i eventually pulled the hooks on what was obviously a 15kg plus fish. Spwein.

I took me about an hour to get over the disappointment. The front cover disappeared sooner than it presented itself.

From that point the best part of the tide was over and we decided to put a few flatty fillets in the fridge. We donked a heap of em too. They were no monsters either but a good keeper size for the table.

For the jews we used 6" ATOMIC JERK MINNOWS on 3/8oz NITRO SALTWATER JIGHEADS and wiped S-Factor all over the lures. It seemed to attract more attention.

For the Flatties we used 3" ATOMIC JERK MINNOWS on 1/4oz NITRO SALTWATER JIGHEADS without any S-Factor. You dont need it for greedy flathead.

By catch were 2 monster rock cod! In Brisbane Waters...bloody unbelievable.

Tomorrow i will have some cool reports to shoot out to you all. Basically around how fish respond to lure colour etc. Excellent reading and well worth the effort.

Kevvie.
